Quality Assurance: a must for the success of a human translation

Quality Assurance: a must for the success of a human translation

Human translation

We all know there is no such thing as a perfect translation. Even if there were, we cannot be sure it would satisfy the average client or the critical one, so we have been looking for ways to improve the quality of our human translation work.

NBT believes that quality cannot be achieved without a system of values. In order to be able to improve the quality of our translations we first have to look at the goal of translation. The main purpose of it is to convey thoughts, ideas and emotions by way of deconstructing, analyzing and recreating in the target language.

We have good news: NBT is working on the implementation of QA.

The translations industry is a highly competitive global market and quality may be the main differentiator. Quality is THE factor that makes the difference between success and failure.

Quality Assurance (QA) may be defined as the act of maintaining human translation services to ensure conformity to customer requirements or other specifications. QA should be implemented by the translation service provider.

We need to get something straight: QA and QC should not be confused. The difference is that QA is process oriented and QC is product oriented. Quality Assurance makes sure you are doing the right things, the right way. Quality Control makes sure the results of what you’ve done are what you expected.

NBT has a few golden rules that help us meet the quality requirements of the most demanding customers:

  • we accept jobs only within the areas of knowledge we are specialized in and we work only with native linguists
  • we do not accept any job before we see the source text or a sample of it
  • we encourage the use TM software such as Trados, Wordfast or Across to avoid omissions and visual mistakes
  • we never hesitate to contact our customers for clarification and further information. When the translator and reviewer are discussing the best writing style, the client may help with further explanation.
  • we always assign a second native translator for proofreading. He checks for correctness, appropriate writing style and consistency.
  • we always ask for information about the target audience for each translation in order to translate for this audience
  • before accepting a job we make sure we clearly understand the objectives of the translation project. As the old saying goes, “Preparation is half the battle”!

Project management plays an essential part in the process of human translation and quality assurance. The Project Manager (PM) is responsible for the overall coordination of translation-related projects for their clients. The main objective of a translation PM is to be the connecting bridge between the client and the linguist who is best prepared for his project.

There are several ways to ensure that language quality is achieved, such as employing highly professional translators. But it is equally important to have a validation and verification system to remove any doubts about discrepancies. NBT developed such an integrated system in order to provide the best quality for our clients and this is not all; NBT offers the best rates. We are open 24 hours to meet your human translation requirements and you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
